About Us

Who We Are

"...this is the most loving church I've ever attended." ----- Christine S. Boaz

Our Church is an inclusive Christian community whose worship, communion, and fellowship are open to all without restriction to gender, nationality, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. We affirm that all have access to the love of Christ and service to God. We practice in the Baptist tradition, the core principles of which are:

Soul Freedom - The individual is responsible to none except God, is totally competent to stand before God, and is capable of discerning meaning and action in life and practice under the direct inspiration of the Spirit of God and Holy Scripture.

Bible Freedom - The Bible is our authority in matters of faith and practice and is to be interpreted in its entirety, using the best scholarship and the discernment of the community.

Church Freedom - We are autonomous and congregational in governance. Our practices, policies, associations, and ministries are set by the congregation under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Holy Scripture.

Religious Freedom - The Church and civil government are independent of each other (separation of church and state). We support a free Church and a free state, separate and individually responsible to God.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am aware that Baptists are a very broad group. Where does WPBC fit in the spectrum of Baptist churches?
A: WPBC seeks to be among the open-hearted and open-minded, freedom-loving Baptists. We affirm the competency of each individual to interpret Scripture as led by the Spirit of God and in the accountability of community. You will not be told what to believe here!

Q: I know there are many different Baptists. What type of Baptist church are you?
A:

Our affiliations within the Baptist family say a lot about who we are. We are associated with the following organizations:

  • American Baptist Churches, USA
  • DC Baptist Convention
  • NorthStar Church Network
  • Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists
  •
Q: I don't come from a church background at all. Will I feel comfortable here?
A: Many of our members have come with no church background and have found a home. You should feel right at home whether you have a deep faith in Christ or simply don't know. We provide a questioner, seeker, or doubter a free environment for search and study, and welcome them with acceptance and love.

Q: I grew up in the church, so I am conversant with basic Christianity. I'm tired of superficiality and am looking for something more. Will I find it here?
A: We invite you to check it out for yourself. We desire a congregation whose climate will assist fully committed Christians in the deepest possible expression of their faith. We set forth the vision of a spiritual life that balances contemplation and action, that encourages a deep internal relationship with the God and that lives out that relationship in a life of mercy and justice supported in community.

Q: Is your church welcoming to children?
A: We have childcare for infants and toddlers during the 11 worship service staffed by loving volunteers who are excited to get to know your child. A greeter will be glad to show you to the children’s area in the Plaza Room before worship begins. Children of all ages are welcome in the service if that is comfortable for the parents.

In the near future, we hope to offer Sunday School for children during the 9:30am Adult Bible Study time.

Q: Is your church accessible to people with disabilities?
A: We have just improved the microphone system for the hearing disabled. Those in wheelchairs can take Washington Plaza West and park at the back of the parking lot close to the church to enter the sanctuary level. The lower level is accessible from Lake Anne Plaza. Unfortunately, there is not elevator access among the levels.

Q: What's the best way to get involved?
A: Just come to a Sunday morning service to experience the warmth, love and spirituality of the church. Then stay for lunch so the pastor and members can meet you!

Q: Do you rent your space?
A: Yes, see our ministries web page for details.
